The 2013 Garden World Spring Festival has opened recently in Muldersdrift outside Johannesburg, and as usual this annual South African garden show has lots of ideas for the home gardener. Here I’m looking at a few of the gardens, and then some more in my next blog post. You can visit the 2013 Garden World Spring Festival until Sunday September 1 2013.

This garden has a curved rusted steel backdrop containing a vertical succulent garden, a wooden deck seating area and a walkway consisting of natural boulders, gravel, cacti and other succulents. Phormium on top of the steel wall and aloes in front of the steel wall, cacti on the low wall flanking the wooden deck.

This garden’s main feature is the splash pool with water feature spilling into the pool. Behind this water wall is an entertainment area. The raised planters against the wall provide texture and colour, and there is a synthetic lawn area surrounded by beds and raised planters containing mass plantings of plants like Acorus, Ophiopogon, Agapanthus and Buxus. Focal plants: palms, cycads and birch trees.

This garden has a bold and modern colour scheme. Quirky touches include the synthetic lawn, chairs covered with synthetic lawn, railway sleepers as well as framed mirrors against a wall.

The Neon Garden Box at Garden World 2013

This garden is all about recycling and city living, with everything constructed from reclaimed pallet wood – from the furniture and decking to the screens and vertical gardens. This design is ideal for small city gardens and balconies, and has neat ideas for growing your own food in a small space.

Lovely Lizette. Are those hedge chairs real? I love the Neon garden box. The succulent bliss is wonderful, so shaped and stylish and beautifully assembled. So many ways to grow; up, out, over and around. Clever, creative minds at work.
