Britain’s best-selling gardening author, Dr David Hessayon of the famous Expert Guides series says that the internet is killing off gardening books.
Dr Hessayon, aged 85, also announced his retirement at a the Gardening Media Guild Awards ceremony in London. Since 1958, Expert Guides has sold over 50 million copies, with at least one Expert Guide finding its way into half of all Britain’s homes.
He said: “The garden reference book market has declined because of the internet. In the future I’ll offer people gardening advice but I won’t write any more.
“If you have a problem you go on the internet. I pity anyone new coming into writing. Five years ago, all the bestselling gardening books were how-to-do-it books. Now it’s look at my garden or look at other people’s gardens.”
