In 2008, 10 year old Katie Stagliano grew a 40lb cabbage in South Carolina, USA. She donated it to a homeless shelter & was so inspired by the astonishing 275 meals (with added rice and ham) it made, she started Katie’s Krops, which has spread to 21 states & 55 kid’s gardens.
Katie’s Krops offers kids aged 9 to 16 garden centre gift cards to kick-start their own vegetable garden projects on donated unused community and school land. In her home town of Summerville, NC, kids use their local garden produce to cook meals, transforming schools into pop-up restaurants. In 2012, Katie was awarded a Clinton Global Citizen Award. But she admits she doesn’t really like cabbage……
