Allotments a lot of work

A record number of UK allotment holders have been asked to vacate their unkempt land during 2012. Councils are blaming gardening shows that make vegetable gardening look too easy.

Reg Knowles, chairman of The Allotments & Gardens Council, says: “Unfortunately people watch the gardening presenters on TV and don’t really see how they have a paid team working seven days a week on their plot. When they realise they have to do all the work themselves, it’s a lot and you have to be able to put the time in.”

Di Appleyard, of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners, adds “There have been more non-cultivation letters issued this year because of the weather and people taking allotments unaware of the work and skills involved.”
