Botanists in hunt for Baby Kate

Amateur botanists have joined the hunt through Michegan’s forests for the remains of a missing baby, as seeds and plant material found on the shoes of the baby’s father could hold the clues…

Four month old Katherine Phillips disappeared from her home over 2 years ago. More than 80 locals with botanical expertise volunteered to help in the search, which also included experts from Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and the Chicago Field Museum.

Authorities told searchers to watch for certain types of moss and sedge, which they bagged for matching with the target species to identify potential dig sites. Searcher have been provided with comprehensive plant keys and identification photographs and specimens.
