NASA is constructing a small technology demonstration unit to study germination of plants in lunar gravity and radiation on the Moon.
Hitching a ride on the new wave of commercial moon landings planned for 2015 onwards, NASA will send a small 1kg seed and habitat experiment to the moon. After landing, water will be added to theĀ Arabidopsis, basil and turnipĀ seeds, and then the subsequent germination and growth monitored for the following 5-10 days. The experimental environment will use the sun’s natural light and radiation and measure germination, phototropism and circumnutation.
