Stephanie Alexander’s joy at seeing her dream realised at Mansfield State School

Stephanie Alexander has been awarded an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) in the Australia Day honours list for her work in setting up the Kitchen Garden Foundation.

‘distinguished service to education through the design and establishment of schools-based learning programs promoting improved food and eating choices for children, and as an author’

Says Ange Barry, Kitchen Garden Foundation CEO:

“For the past 13 years Stephanie has inspired the engagement of thousands of Australian school children in pleasurable food education at school each week. Stephanie’s vision and passion first saw the creation of the Kitchen Garden Program at Collingwood College in Melbourne in 2001. Today 458 Australian schools in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas participate in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, seeing over 57,000 children grow, harvest, prepare and share delicious fresh food”

Since 2001 Stephanie has been devoted to the development of a primary school kitchen garden program that can be integrated with the general primary curriculum. Her strong belief is that the earlier children learn about food through example and pleasurable hands-on experience, the better their food choices will be throughout life.

“The students learn the science and chemistry of gardening and cooking; history, geography and culture as they study cuisines; numeracy skills as they measure, mix ratios and compare data; and fundamental literacy as they read and follow recipes”
