Papa Westray (aka Papay) in the Orkneys was host to the recent festival Papay Gyro Nights, where Danish designer Simon Hjermind Jensen of SHJWORKS assembled his latest creation, the Fire Shelter: Papay.
Fire Shelter: Papay, inspired by nomadic tents combined with the craftsmanship of the tailor is made from 2-dimensional plywood pieces sewn together with rope to create a 3-dimensional object.
The shelter is the secured with stones placed on the internal floor shelf to hold it down against the gales and storms that sweep across the Orkney Islands. A hole in the top allows smoke from the warming fire to escape.
Although the separate pieces of Paypay are designed to be cut by a CNC router, the remote site required a low-tech jigsaw alternative.
Designer Simon Hjermind Jensen confirms that the internal acoustics proved perfect for songs and storytelling.
Fire Shelter: Papay received the Knap o Howar Art Prize of 2014 given out by the festival, and the smell of its smoke became the perfume of Papay Gyro Nights 2014.
[Papay Gyro Nights is a festival celebrating video art, sound art, experimental film, music and architecture. It takes place at the first full moon in February on Papa Westray.
