GenY has discovered a new love – gardening. ‘Britain at Home’ research by Lloyds Bank in the UK found that young homeowners aged 25-34 spent more than twice the national average on their outdoor areas.

Although gardening is often seen as a pursuit for the over 55s, the research found that among the 2000 GenY respondents that 19% have bought or built a greenhouse and 29% have bought plants for their garden in the past 12 months. Their average spend was £747, compared to the national average of only £366.

When asked about the reason for their investment in outdoor spaces, one third said it was because they loved gardening, on quarter wanted to improve their outdoor entertaining area, and 14% were motivated by the expected increase in property value.
