Seven year old Jia O’Dea from Queensland has won the Yates Junior Landcare Challenge for her crop of radishes.
Winter-season crops, grown by almost 5000 entrants aged from pre-schoolers to 17 in the Winter Vegie Growing Journey, included radish, carrot, broccoli, spinach and lettuce. Each entry included a grower’s diary with photos and captions.
Jia wrote in her entry:
“The radishes grew much bigger than I thought they would… I can’t wait to plant some more seeds and watch them grow!”
Runner-up, nine year old Tessa Quinlan from Victoria, was relieved when the hares and kangaroos didn’t eat her radishes, so she could.
Group winners Leaps and Bounds Child Care in Wilsonton had to build a bigger scarecrow to defend their quickly growing broccoli.
