GardenDrum author Phillip Withers has won a Silver Award and the highly-prized Honda Sustainability Award at the 2015 Melbourne garden show (MIFGS) for his ‘Food Forest’.
Featuring strong pops of solid colour amid a cornucopia of food plants and vibrant flowers, ‘The Food Forest’ drew big crowds every day. Something of Phillip’s exuberance always comes out in his designs. They just feel happy and people really respond to that.
And yet for all its feel-good, the garden does have a serious sustainability side, incorporating water storage, reused materials, lots of garden area, food plants and even chickens.
There’s also lots of clever ideas for small spaces, as you’d expect from a landscape designer who specialises in urban courtyards. I really like the way he has worked the angle in this design, the slightly patchwork effect of the timber decking, the beautiful rust-effect painted panels and that new Outdeco panel design.
Actually you left out the best parts of Phillip’s design. The plantings were stunning and superb. A mix of food aand flowers, fruits and ornamental – just gorgeous. Also the chooks puttering about in their cages was a lovely touch. The most personable and enjoyable garden on site (in my view)
