Each year, the Sculpture at Scenic World competition and exhibition at Katoomba, NSW produces yet more wonderful sculptures and installations. From the challenging to the simply beautiful, it’s a go-to for sculpture lovers.
The 2015 major prize of $20,000 has gone to Marrickville artist Elyssa Sykes-Smith for her work ‘Canopy of Thoughts‘, a spectacular assemblage of recycled timber pieces. Representing that grasped moment of clarity amid a haze of uncertainty, the dramatic scale of Sykes-Smith artwork was described by the judges as ambitious and lyrical.
“Sykes-Smith’s artwork offers the viewer a dynamic experience which confronts the environment”
Set in a temperate rainforest, Sculpture at Scenic World offers a unique, natural environment in which to display the 31 selected sculptures by both Australian and international artists.
The independent judging panel including Emeritus Professor David Williams AM, Anne Loxley, Curator C3West at MCA and Clara Hali, sculptor. Finland’s Sandra Nyberg was highly commended for her work ‘Heritage‘.
