Plants in the pants – NZ smuggling

Selfish, law-breaking gardening idiots still abound. A New Zealand resident has been caught returning from his original Polish homeland with plants secreted in his underpants.

The biosecurity alert was raised by two sniffer dogs at Auckland Airport which caught a whiff of something they didn’t like around the man’s groin area. A strip search revealed the man was wearing two pairs of underpants with the plants tucked in between the two layers.

The plant material seized included seeds, cuttings, bulbs and tubers which the man claimed he wanted to bring back to his New Zealand garden as he couldn’t buy the same plants locally. He’d even souvenired some ivy from a Polish castle and had brought that back too.

He has been charged under the NZ Biosecurity Act with smuggling prohibited plant material.
