Los Angeles’ main water reservoir is now covered with 96 million shade balls to protect the city’s water supply.
The 100mm (4 inch) HDPE plastic balls (costing 36c each) are weighed down with water inside, so they float part submerged in the water.
By covering the reservoir water surface, Los Angeles estimates it will save 300 million gallons of water that’s usually lost to evaporation each year. By protecting the water from sunlight, it also reduces the likelihood of toxic algal blooms.
The balls will last about 10 years and will be replaced on a regular maintenance cycle. Reports did not mention what becomes of them.
