If you like your plants dark, a new release ornamental capsicum called ‘Onyx Red’ is sure to be right up your alley.
The new cultivar, by US company All-America Selections, has been awarded the company’s 2018 Flower Winner for its combination of compact size, ease of care and its contrasting red/black colours.
There is no doubt it’s a striking plant, but ‘Onyx Red’ will not be everyone’s cup of tea. In design, how many black foliage plants are used on a regular basis or on mass? It’s a tricky colour to work with.
It’s a cultivar of Capsicum annuum, so is best grown as an annual and, I presume, the fruits are also edible? It grows to around 30-40cm tall with a compact, bushy habit.
It could be popular as an oddity but I’m not sure it is going to have a terribly wide appeal. Has any gardener ever thought,
‘I know what my garden needs – more black!’

Lovely plant. Black is a stunning colour to work with. It creates a rich calm especially pared with the darkest greens. You get a shimmer effect that draws you in. Like the shadows of the deep. Definitely what i sometimes think “more black”. Black and red is a classic but black and pure white or silver is sublime. Yea i love all tones of black.
