We were driving around the Val d’Orcia in Tuscany, pausing to watch a farmer on an antique tractor tilling the field, when my husband remarked that there was something ‘wrong’ with the landscape.
Beautiful weather, fabulous displays, talks and demonstrations combined to make the 2018 Perth Garden Festival the most successful Perth garden event for many years. Held at a picturesque riverside location in Victoria Park, the show attracted about 34,000 visitors over the four days.
There was eighty years experience breeding kangaroo paws when Angus Stewart met 82 year-old pioneer breeder Keith Oliver in his Perth garden recently. My Perth garden is the inaugural garden opening with Open Gardens West Coast and I’ve been spending all my spare time making sure it lives up to the honour. The new, not-for-profit scheme will open three Perth gardens this year and a statewide program in 2017. It was at a meeting of heritage rose lovers that I first heard about Ninfa, a romantic, rambling, Italian garden built in the ruins of a medieval town. People spoke of it in reverential terms and my interest was piqued by their idyllic description – old roses and vines cascading from ruined towers and trees, scrambling along crumbling archways and overhanging crystal clear streams.
