A German biologist has found dangerous levels of lead and other heavy metals in home vegetable gardens – and not just those near busy roads.

Ina Säumel from the Technical University of Berlin tested soil samples near busy roads – which were unsurprisingly found to have dangerously high levels of lead – but also those from gardens far from such obvious contaminants.

One third (9 out of 27) of the soil samples had ‘problematic’ levels of heavy metals. These gardens may have had inappropriate use of pesticides or fertilisers in the past, including the spreading of contaminated ash to ‘sweeten the soil’.
