Ellerslie’s Emerging Designs – Student of the Year competition is looking for the best design for a rooftop garden at the Christchurch show on 6-10 March 2013.
The design brief specifies a rooftop garden for a young, single professional man or woman with no kids. Their client is modern and design focussed, and has just moved into a reasonably large, contemporary apartment in the centre of town, with space for a rooftop garden. This is someone not afraid to party and entertain at home but who is also eco aware and loves to live surrounded by plants. Innovation is the name of the game.
Eight gardens will feature a wide range of ideas and styles, with most emphasizing sustainable design principles, versatility and easy maintenance. Among those entering are life-long friends and landscape architecture students Bridget Robilliard and Kate Street, who have come up with a design bound to appeal to young men as it features a dart board, a hide-away foosball table, and barbecue facilities. They have even managed to incorporate old cinema seats from the Rialto Theatre in Christchurch into their rooftop gardens so the boys can sit back and put their feet up.
A Wellington entrant in the competition, Bayley LuuTomes, says his rooftop garden is all about entertaining. It will feature a stunning lighting design by Kevin Cawley, a glass bridge, coloured glass pergola, a moving mirror image from Metro Glasstech and an outdoor TV.
The Emerging Designs winner will take home a $5000NZD contribution to their student fees. Click here for all the Emerging Designs entrant details.
