Tomatomania!, a tomato-selling pop-up store through western USA, reports a growing interest in unusual tomato varieties, particularly the very odd blue tomato, such as Indigo Rose.
Scott Daigre of Tomatomania! also reports that buyers are keen on other dark colours like Berkeley Tie Dye, Cherokee Purple and Black Krim. The blue gene was apparently isolated in Oregon state, which does a lot of cold-climate tomato breeding and it introduces beneficial anthocyanins. Originally more of a novelty and colourful salad addition, the newer strains of blue tomato have a much better taste.
