dacha garden in russia

A dacha is a Russian equivalent of the UK allotment garden. Although the proportion of Russia’s food grown in these small productive gardens has fallen from a 90% peak during the communist days, in 2011 the dacha gardeners of Russia still produced 40% of the nation’s food.

During the latter half the 20th century all Russian children learned how to grow and harvest food as part of the national school curriculum and many families still grow a large percentage of their own food in their dacha gardens, selling excess produce in local markets and corner stores.
