Artist, grower and conservationist Sam van Aken in New York has created the Tree of 40 Fruits – a fruit tree with 40 different heirloom varieties of stone fruit grafted on to one rootstock. How does he do it?
Sam van Aken uses a procedure called chip grafting to create his trees which in spring will be laden with a huge variety of colourful blossom, showing 40 different plum, peach, nectarine and apricot heirloom varieties. By carefully selecting the varieties, he can even create a succession of blossom.
His aim is to conserve and spread these heirloom stone fruit varieties throughout the USA.
