My partner and I run and small contract cutting business in Adelaide where we use machines such as a water jet cutter and a large router. Most of our work involves cutting for designers, engineers and sign companies. During the time we’ve been running this business, we have become very experienced in working with different materials, and the processes of powdercoating and anodising.
It was a natural progression then to combine that metalworking knowledge with my more artistic side when I decided to do something that we could create in-house using all our own facilities. Kivvyfox was born!
My idea for Kivvyfox panels came from when my partner and I were looking for artwork for our house. We found that outdoor panels in a 2D format were very popular, but the market seemed overcrowded with lots of very similar designs. So we decided that it was time for us to design and manufacture a new range of unique 3D-style panels.
It took a long time to get the aluminium panels exactly right, particularly as the backing pieces are attached in a special way to the front panel. They are not glued, but attached in a way so there are no visible attachment marks, which gives the panels a floating look. They had to be suitable for mounting on our outside wall so we needed to ensure they were fully weatherproof for rain, hail and sunshine!!!! There is a range of powdercoated colours, including Corten 10 (rust colour), which is very popular.
Designs
Once we had the right construction method, we wanted to design a range of panels to suit different homes and gardens. The range now includes:
Monstera for either modern or traditional homes and gardens
Flourish which I feel suits a more formal or traditional setting
Lionfish which developed from our passion for diving overseas, creating a design that I feel works well around water, like a pool or spa area
Fleur which came about when I noticed a lot of houses were using black and white tiles on their outdoor verandahs.
Explosion is my version of a modern piece. The bright colours and this design were inspired by a hibiscus flower, although when it came together I thought it look more like an explosion rather than a flower !!
The Kivvyfox panels weigh approximately 15kg for the small size, and about 30kg for the larger version. The larger size really makes a statement in a large outdoor area, particularly around a swimming pool or barbecue area.
There are several different colours options (see my Kivvyfox website) and I have selected colours that I think make the most of each of the designs. We also supply brackets for installation, especially suited to outdoor walls, and the fixings are completely hidden behind the back panel.
If you can’t attach anything to your preferred wall (a difficulty faced by many people renting), I have now designed a very modern version of an easel, as well as a stand, so you display your Kivvyfox Panel that way either inside or outside. Note that the easel and/or stand is only suitable for the smaller panel.
The material is lightweight aluminium which is completely weatherproof. Using aluminium means there is no rusting or tarnishing at all, and the powdercoating will not be affected by sun or rain.
