We lived in Townsville for 13 years and noticed the Council had used Indian Mast Trees in roundabouts and Council gardens. We planted 6 of our own 2003 and they grew very rapidly reaching 4 metres in a couple of years. They prefer full sun as we put a couple in a semi shaded garden and they took over twice as long to grow. I noticed on the web that Mackay Council put some in but a few “experts” said they would attract bats etc. Absolute “rubbish” as ours never had any fruit or flowers to attract them. We moved to Maryborough four years ago and we planted 25 mast trees along our boundaries. They haven’t done as well, I think as the winter is decidedly cooler than Townsville and it knocks them around a bit – but they regenerate full leaf cover once summer arrives. Just a note – I went back to Townsville early this year and was surprised to see our old mast trees were undamaged after the cyclone – not a branch out of place. The place to get them is Day Dawn Nursery in Idalia, Townsville. They used to cost approx $35 each.
